First Time Cruiser? Here’s What I Wish I Knew Before Embarkation Day

Taking your first cruise is exciting—but let’s be honest, it can also be a little overwhelming. Between check-in windows, luggage tags, and mysterious “muster drills,” there’s a lot happening before you even set sail. After cruising with my family multiple times, here’s what I wish I knew before stepping onto that first ship.

1. Arrive the Day Before—Always

Flight delays happen. And when you're boarding a floating hotel that leaves on time with or without you, it's just not worth the risk. Book a hotel near the port and give yourself that buffer. Bonus: It makes embarkation morning way less stressful!

2. Print Your Luggage Tags & Check-In Early

Most cruise lines have digital check-in and let you choose an arrival window. Do it as soon as possible to snag an early boarding time. Then, print those luggage tags in advance and secure them to your bags before arriving at port.

3. Carry-On Essentials Are a Must

You likely won’t see your checked luggage until late afternoon, so pack a day bag with:

  • Swimsuits

  • Sunscreen

  • Travel documents

  • Medications

  • A change of clothes

  • Kids’ entertainment or snacks

Trust me—this makes day one so much smoother.

4. The Muster Drill Is Mandatory—but Easy Now

Gone are the days of standing shoulder-to-shoulder on deck in a life jacket. Most cruises now offer a digital muster drill where you watch a safety video and check in at your muster station. Do it right after boarding so you're not scrambling later.

5. The Buffet Isn’t Your Only Option

Most new cruisers head straight to the buffet—but it's also the most chaotic spot on day one. Look for alternate lunch options like the main dining room, poolside grill, or pizza stations. They're usually less crowded and just as tasty.

6. Your Room Might Not Be Ready Right Away

Cabins are often ready around 1–2 PM. If you board early, expect to hang out on deck or explore the ship first. Use this time to book shows, explore the kids’ club, or just chill with a drink in hand.

7. Download the Cruise App Before You Board

Most cruise lines have an app that works with the ship’s Wi-Fi. You’ll use it to:

  • View the daily schedule

  • Chat with family onboard

  • Check dining times

  • Book excursions or shows

Tip: Put your phone in airplane mode and connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi even if you don't buy a package—some features still work for free.

8. Gratuities, Drink Packages & Wi-Fi Are Better Booked in Advance

These can often be cheaper if purchased ahead of time on your cruise planner. Look out for deals in the weeks before your trip. And yes, you can bring wine or soda on board depending on the cruise line—check the rules!

Final Thoughts

Your first cruise will be full of unforgettable memories—but a little preparation goes a long way. If you’re looking for a first-timer’s cruise packing list or a guide to picking the best family-friendly excursions, check out my other posts below!
