What to Pack for Mexico: Essentials for Families Traveling Smarter

Planning a family trip to Mexico? Whether you're headed to a beach resort in CancĂşn, exploring ruins in Tulum, or hopping off a cruise ship in Progreso, knowing what to pack can make or break your trip. As a travel-obsessed mom who’s explored Mexico with my kid in tow more than once, I’ve learned what’s truly essential—and what you can leave behind.

This guide will help you pack smarter, travel lighter, and avoid that “I totally forgot ___” moment at the airport.

But here’s the thing: Mexico isn’t one-size-fits-all. Packing for Mexico depends on where you're going, how you’re traveling, and who’s coming with you.

🎒 Mexico Packing Essentials (That Most People Forget)

Let’s start with the items most overlooked—but totally useful:

✅ Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Not only is it better for the environment, but it’s required at many eco-tourism sites and cenotes.

✅ Lightweight, Long-Sleeve Shirt

Perfect for sun protection and sudden cool breezes, especially if you're visiting ruins or cenotes.

✅ Water Shoes

From rocky beaches to slippery cenote steps, these will save your feet—and your vacation.

✅ Travel Towel or Sarong

Compact, quick-drying, and can double as a beach blanket, shawl, or even a changing cover for kids.

✅ Bug Spray (Preferably Deet-Free)

Especially important in jungle or coastal areas like the Yucatán or Chiapas.

đź‘™ What to Wear in Mexico

Think breezy, breathable, and versatile:

  • Linen pants, flowy dresses, and moisture-wicking shirts

  • Swimsuits and a rash guard for kids

  • A sun hat with chin strap (trust me—wind happens!)

  • Comfortable sandals and walking shoes

And yes—you can totally look cute and still be practical. (I pack in a mix of neutral + bold prints for this exact reason.)

🛑 What Not to Pack for Mexico

Save space and skip these:

  • Heavy jeans or sweaters (unless you’re going to higher altitudes)

  • Fancy heels—most streets are cobblestone or sand

  • Full-size anything (travel sizes or refillables work better)
