How to Get to the Black Sand Beach in Vieques (Playa Negra)
How to Get to the Black Sand Beach in Vieques, Puerto Rico (Playa Negra)
Ready? Let’s go!
Step 1: Fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico
Start by booking a flight into San Juan (SJU). This is the easiest jumping-off point for getting to Vieques, especially if you’re coming from the mainland U.S. We flew to San Juan on points! We paid basically nothing for the flights.
Step 2: Uber to the Ceiba Ferry Terminal
The drive from San Juan to Ceiba takes about an hour, but traffic can fluctuate depending on the time of day. If you’re traveling a family (like we were), bring snacks. Also, purchase and download your ferry tickets ahead of time.
The ferry ride itself can be smooth — or bumpy. We experienced choppy water on the way over, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, plan accordingly. The ride is short (about 30–45 minutes), but it’s open water.
👉 Pro tip: Build in buffer time and arrive 1 hour before your scheduled departure time. Ferries are scheduled, and you don’t want to miss yours.
Step 3: Take the Puerto Rico Ferry to Vieques
Book the Puerto Rico Ferry to Vieques in advance if possible. The ride takes about 30–45 minutes, and seas can be choppy depending on conditions.
Once you arrive, you’ll dock on the north side of Vieques.
Step 4: Taxi to Esperanza
Once you dock in Vieques, you won’t find Uber waiting. Local taxis line up near the ferry terminal, and rates are typically fixed depending on your destination. From the ferry terminal, grab a taxi and head to Esperanza, a relaxed beach town on the south side of the island.
We chose to base ourselves in Esperanza because it’s walkable, relaxed, and has restaurants right along the water. If you’re staying overnight, this is the easiest place to coordinate UTV rentals and beach access.
Step 5: Rent a UTV or Side-by-Side
This step is key. To reach Playa Negra, rent a UTV
(or side-by-side) in Esperanza.
Step 6: Drive to the Path Entrance
Use Google Maps or any GPS for Playa Negra Vieques, but keep an eye out for the sign!
You’ll see:
- A small sign
- An unmarked dirt path
- Limited space to park across the road from the dirt path.
Park your UTV here. This is as far as vehicles go.
Step 7: Walk 15 Minutes Past the Sign
This part surprised us. The path isn’t a manicured trail — it’s dirt, sometimes flooded, sometimes slippery depending on recent rain. There are sections where you’ll question whether you’re going the right way. The trail can flood.
We made it!
We filmed the entire walk so you can see exactly what the terrain looks like. Notice how muddy sections can get after rain — this caught us off guard. "How to Get to the Black Sand Beach in Vieques."
What Makes Playa Negra So Special?
Playa Negra’s black sand comes from volcanic minerals washed down from Vieques’ hills. The darker the sand, the better—so visiting after rain often delivers the most dramatic look.
This beach is:
Playa Negra is wild and uncrowded — and that’s its charm. It’s not ideal for swimming far out due to strong waves, but it’s incredible for photos, exploring the shoreline, and experiencing something completely different from the typical Caribbean beach.
Tips Before You Go!
- Go earlier in the day to avoid heat on the trail
- Skip white shoes (trust me)
- Check weather and tide conditions
- Bring water—there are no facilities
What to wear:
- Sneakers, flip flops, or water shoes
- A bathing suit/cover up or clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
Is Playa Negra Worth the Effort?
If you’re expecting a calm, swimmable, family-friendly beach with facilities — this isn’t it.
If you’re looking for something raw, dramatic, and different from every other Caribbean beach you’ve seen — this is absolutely worth the trek.
We stayed close to shore because the waves were strong. The real magic here is the contrast — black sand, crashing waves, and almost no crowds.
Final Thoughts
Playa Negra isn’t easy to reach—but that’s the magic. If you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll experience one of the most unforgettable beaches in Puerto Rico.
