3 Travel Mistakes I’ll Never Make Again (So You Don’t Have To)
Let’s face it: even seasoned travelers have moments they wish they could do over. Whether it’s sprinting through the airport or dragging oversized luggage through cobblestone streets, mistakes happen. But after years of traveling with my family—sometimes smoothly, sometimes not—I’ve learned a few lessons the hard way.
So, in the spirit of helping you travel smarter and stress-free, here are three travel mistakes I’ll never make again (and how to avoid them).
1. Not Double-Checking the Gate Multiple Times
This one nearly cost us a flight. We were in Las Vegas, en route to our next adventure, and everything seemed smooth… until it wasn’t. The gate changed during our layover, but we didn’t catch the update. We waited patiently at an empty gate, thinking we were early. Spoiler: we weren’t.
By the time we realized the gate had changed, we had to run across the terminal with our kids and carry-ons in tow. Thankfully, we made it—but barely. Since then, I’ve made it a rule to refresh the airline app or check the departure boards every 15–20 minutes, especially during layovers.
Pro Tip: Sign up for flight alerts through your airline’s app and turn on notifications. Gate changes happen more often than you think—and usually when you’re tired, distracted, or grabbing snacks.
2. Packing Too Much (Especially for Walking Destinations)
Raise your hand if you’ve ever overpacked. ✋ Yeah, me too.
On one particular trip, we had to lug suitcases through narrow streets, across uneven sidewalks, and up steep staircases—all while wrangling kids and dodging tuk-tuks. We were exhausted before the real adventure even started.
Here’s the truth: 90% of the time, you wear the same 5 outfits on repeat anyway. So why carry the extra 15 pounds of “just in case” gear?
Since that experience, we’ve adopted a minimalist approach: neutral layers, multi-use pieces, and shared toiletries in travel-sized containers. And I remind myself every trip that medications and passports are the only things you can’t buy when you get there. Everything else is replaceable.

3. Paying Full Price for Flights—Especially in Business Class
Let me admit something that still stings: I once paid full price for a business class seat. And I didn’t have to.
That same flight could have cost me next to nothing if I had booked with points and miles. I didn’t realize how easy it is to earn travel rewards with everyday purchases—and I definitely didn’t know how much value I was leaving on the table.
Now, I use travel credit cards strategically and track my rewards religiously. From international business class flights to hotel stays, we’ve saved thousands—and traveled more often—because I stopped using my debit card and started letting my purchases work for me.

Final Thoughts: Mistakes Are the Best Teachers
Every traveler has their “oh no” moments—but each one is a stepping stone to smoother adventures ahead. For me, the biggest game-changers were:
✅ Staying alert to gate changes
✅ Packing like a pro (light and smart)
✅ And using points instead of paying cash for flights
Whether you’re just getting into family travel or you’re already a globetrotting parent, I hope these lessons save you some stress—and maybe even some cash.
